Well, It's happened again...

Hey everyone

As far as what happened again, I'm sure you're all guessing. It's fairly simple, actually...our baptisms fell through. It's not something I'm not used to, but it's just a bit disappointing when it happens. But, luckily for us, the family is still really strong, and super ready for baptism.
The family we've been teaching, Lordes, Maria, Julia, and Jesse have all received everything we have to teach, and Maria was the one we were going to have baptized. But, when we went over there on Thursday, after we had finished the teaching, we asked her if she was ready. She said that she would like more time. In my mind, I was going, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! NOT AGAIN?!?!?!?!" I've experienced these sorts of things, and it's painful. But, they're still super ready. But, considering what happened on Saturday, this could either be a baptism pusher or a baptism killer. Their father/Julia's husband, Dionicio, passed away on Saturday morning. When we heard about that, we were super sad. It was really disappointing, especially since he was listening and enjoying the lesson. However, I'm sure he's a lot happier now. He had suffered a stroke recently, and was confined to a wheelchair, and couldn't speak or walk. I'm sure he's a lot happier right now. Plus, I think he'll accept the Gospel in the Spirit world. The next time we visit his family, we'll tell them about the vicarious work we do in the temples, and say how Jesse can go there and have the ordinances performed for his father. I'm sure they'll like that.
As far as other people, we have another investigator who has a baptismal date. Her name is Leonor, and she's super ready. She's been going to church for the last year or so, on and off, and she's super ready. She knows everything, but she's kinda hesitating baptism. She says she doesn't have an answer, and she's just expecting that perfect moment of peace so that she'd know it's true. But, that moment isn't going to come. There's too many stressors in life for it to be perfect. The time is now to work out our salvation. Still, though, she accepted the date to be baptized on the 21st, and we're looking forward to that. She's ready. She just needs to do it.
That's about it as far as other investigators go. Speaking on one, who we've been meeting with for a while. We've been going there every so often, and they are ready. The girlfriend is even reading daily. They just have, as Elder Potter put it, so much freakin' flojera (laziness). It's true, though. If they could come to church one day, they'd be sold. We're still working with them, and we hope that this sunday is the one.
That's about it. Until next week, take care, everyone.

I think that I'm super special or something

Hello everybody

So, I'm sure you're wondering why I picked this particular title, and I'll tell you in a little bit, but first, I'll get to a bit of what's been happening here in Sun Valley.
So, we have this amazing family who is getting ready to be baptized this week. Their names are Lordes, Maria, Julia, and Dionicio Martinez. We've been teaching them for a while, but they're super ready. We're thinking that we'll be able to baptize Maria and Julia and maybe Dionicio this week. Lordes knows it's true, but wants to wait for her kids to start listening. We have no problem with that. All we have to do is burn through the last of the commandments and they'll be ready by this sunday, which is when we're thinking of doing it. What's really great about them is that Maria and Julia can't read, and Dionicio is confined to a wheelchair from suffering a stroke, but when we go over, and when they've come to church, they've said that they've felt something that they've never felt in the other churches they've been to, and they want that feeling with them. So, yeah, they're beyond ready, and I'm super excited, because they'll be my first baptisms on the mission. I'm super happy about that.
As far as anyone else, we've been trying to get in with a good family. The mom in there is reading the Book of Mormon regularly, and feels that it's true. The husband, as far as I know, likes what we're teaching, and the children do, too. However, we're worried because their nine year-old daughter is being visited by Jehovah's Witnesses. Not good at all. We figure it won't be much longer until spanish ones start visiting to talk to the parents, which is what we don't want. Jehovah's Witnesses are nice people, but they can sometimes really hinder the work. It stinks to have to compete, essentially, against them, but the truth shall always triumph.
Also, we have a young investigator who is reading the Book of Mormon. We were actually quite surprised when he texted us at 9:30 one night, asking what exceedingly and other words meant. When we heard that, we were like "YES! YES! YEEEEEEEESSSS!" It's always good to know that your investigators have been reading. Other than that, we've been working to get new investigators from other referrals.
Okay, so I'm sure you're all wondering why I'm super special. Here's why: In Lake L.A., I was thinking about Pokemon, and I thought I'd give a shot at trying to name the first 151 pokemon. I did that, no problem. Then, I went further and started naming 152 to 251. I stopped for a while, and put it away. But, back here, it's crawled back out of the hole, and I'm now two away from having that one done. Then, I decided to check how super crazy I was, and started doing 252 to 386. I'm now two away on that one as well. Then, just to make completely sure I had gone bonkers, I went from 387 to 493, which I'm four away from having that one finished. You people are free to tell me how super crazy I am, considering how I'm able to name about 485 of 493 Pokemon, but I think I just have a few too many problems that need addressing soon. Anyways, that's my interesting thought for the week, and take care.

how is the new area?

Well, hello all you children out there.

I'm sure you're all wondering what the heck happened this week in Sun Valley California. It's nothing too special, although a few interesting things did happen at some points.
On Monday, I had to be down here fairly early, which was sad because I didn't get to do a whole lot with the people in Lake L.A., though it was nice to be back in the valley.
On Wednesday, just before Elder Potter and I were about to go out, my trainer, Elder Houghton, showed up at our apartment with his family. I'd heard a lot of good things about them, and it was really interesting to meet them. He was done with his mission on Wednesday, and he decided to visit his son, me. As far as his family, they're all really cool. Also, his sister, Tiffany Houghton, has made some songs, and has released them. She's really good. If you haven't heard any of her songs, look her up. She always would love more fans, as her dad told me, and why not? Her music rocks.
As far as the area goes, it's super ghetto here. There's a lot of poor houses, apartments, and people, but I don't mind. I actually love the valley the most of any part of the mission. The desert just isn't my cup of (herbal) tea. We're working hard, and we're getting ready to have a few baptisms fairly soon. I'm getting super excited, and so is Elder Potter. As far as Elder Potter, he's super cool. We're both ready and willing to work hard, and we are ready to give it our all. I bet it won't be long before I start having pictures on my camera of baptismal whites. Those are fun.
Also, just a random thought for those who care, but last Wednesday marked the day that I've been a missionary for 400 days. That's weird. I'm not too sure how I got to this point, but it's pretty cool. Anyways, that's about it.
Actually, I just remembered something. Last night, when we were on our way home, we got stopped by a born-again christian. He asked us to pull out our bibles and look up Matt. 23:15. For those who know that chapter, that's the chapter where Jesus denounces the scribes and pharisees as hypocrites. As soon as I heard that, I knew we were in for a bashing. I won't go over the needless details, but it was super annoying. I think born-again christians are some of the hardest people to try and teach. They focus simply on being baptized. The great thing is that as soon as you're baptized, it doesn't matter what the heck you do in this life, you're saved.
Anyways, I'm running out of time, so I gotta go.

A new transfer, a new companion, a new area, but the same old valley...

Hello everyone

As the title to this email points out, I have been transferred. I am now in the North Hollywood 4th ward, spanish, and my companion is Elder Potter. He seems like a really cool guy, and I feel like I'm already bonding super well with the members here. It was a member who gave me a ride down here from Lake L.A. Even though I'm excited to be in a new area, and back in the freakin' San Fernando Valley, I'm really going to miss a lot of the elders I left back in the desert. Elder Ulloa is one I'm going to miss a lot, too. He and I became such good friends, and the sad thing is that this is his last transfer, so this is very likely the last day I'll ever see him.
Anyways, I bet a few of you are wondering why I got transferred so quickly. I was only in Lake L.A. for two transfers (12 weeks), so here's the reason. An elder was transferred up there, with Pres. Martin intending to have him take Elder Huskinson's place as Pres. Gonzalez' right hand man in the branch. The branch is so small, and the members are so new that they have little idea of organization. So, the missionaries, namely the DL, handle some of the stuff. However, this elder didn't meld very well with the branch, so Elder Huskinson was kept up there for at least another transfer, and I'm now back in the valley. If not, I probably would be getting a new companion in Lake L.A. today, but no, I'm now standing in a library in Burbank writing this email. Even though I'll miss the people I've met, I won't miss the heat. The desert has been really hot as of late, and it's not been pleasant. Although it's a bit humid in the valley right now, it's much cooler than normal. That I can live with.
So, here's my new address:

Elder Marcus Shepherd
9057 Cayuga Ave.
Sun Valley, CA 91352

I'll talk to you all next week, and take care.

Elder Shepherd

P.S. This last saturday was my 13 month mark. That's freaky that I have less than a year left.

WHERE'S THE LOVE...

Seriously?

I opened up my email inbox this morning, and all I see are the two emails I receive every week: The one from Pres. Martin, and the email about my MSF card finances. Nothing at ALL from family, friends, people who partly give a crap, etc...I can't believe this at all. This is probably the first time in my whole mission (MTC included) that I've opened my inbox to absolute emptiness. *sigh* Here I am, being diligent in sending emails, and I get no love from anyone who may partly love me. Why.........
Anyways, apart from the lack of amor, things have been going okay here. I'm coming up on the end of another transfer this week, so if you have any letters or packages (mom, where is it?) that you want to send me, please send them a week from now, as I may be gone. I don't think I'm leaving this area, but I have a sure feeling that one of us is being transferred. We don't know, but we may find out tomorrow. One of the APs (my trainer, actually) is leaving, and a slot is open for a new AP. I honestly think Elder Huskinson has all the stuff to be a good AP, but we don't know. There are tons of missionaries here, and only one of them will be the AP. We'll see. If we don't get a call today or tomorrow, it's not happening. However, I'm getting the sick feeling in my stomach that I'm going to train. I don't know why, but that's just how I feel. I don't know, but I think it may happen. I don't think I'm ready to train, but we never know.
As far as missionary work, we've been trying to recover from a slow few weeks. We've been trying to find new people, and it's been working, but a lot of our potentials and investigators that we have had have been going awol on us. We're not too happy about that, but that's what's happening. We did find a good potential family that could totally get baptized. Time will tell, though.
So, that's about it. Once again, don't send letters or packages until next monday, when I have word on my fate, but I'll still be on email for another 30 minutes or so if somebody takes a bit of time for some lovin' for Shepe. (That's the nickname that every one here has given me, because Shepherd is a bit hard to pronounce for latinos, so Shepe is my nickname here.)

With love (since I have some to actually share)

Another week...

Well, hello everyone

This is just another week. There really hasn't been anything of great report for our area. We have been working with the English elders a lot, and their area is currently flourishing. However, we haven't had much. Since we helped them a lot, our area has been dying down a bit. We're working super hard to change that, though, and we're going to continue to work hard.
As for investigators, one of our investigator families had to drop us because their son, who owns the house they're living in, doesn't want us to go over there anymore. It's sad, because they were SO golden, but the seed has been planted, and maybe someday it can grow and be harvested. Other than that, there hasn't been anything really great to mention. However, I actually just remembered a funny story that happened to me yesterday at a Goodwill store. For those who don't know, Goodwill is essentially like Deseret Industries, just not church-run. Since it was so funny, I shall explain it in novel form:

"And thus it was, Elders Ulloa, Huskinson, Herrera, and myself were in Santa Clarita, having a doctor appointment taken care of. After having been at the mall for a few hours, we went searching around the nice part of our field of labor, Santa Clarita. We searched around and found, sitting atop a hill, a great and spacious Goodwil building. Drawn by the aspect of cheap clothes and ties, we went inside. I was drawn to the electronics department, in search of a novelty. I browsed the movies, DVDs, cassette tapes, records, and old television sets. I was losing hope, because I could not see. Then, when I looked down, I saw, in all it's blazing brown and gray glory, a Nintendo Entertainment System.
My heart leaped, and my wallet was singing with the prospect. I picked it up, examining it, and imagining Handel's "Hallelujah" playing in the background. However, upon searching the bag taped on the top of cords, I noticed that the power cord was missing. The heavenly song stopped, and I could hear my heart sagging in failure. But, I was not to be deterred. I searched the boxes of miscellaneous cords fervently, and found an adequate replacement. Upon finding this, my joy rekindled, and I went to the front to ask if the aged piece of hardware could be tested. I borrowed a game from their shelf, anxiously hooked it up to a television with the supervision of an employee, and pressed the power button, ready to enjoy the nostalgia. However, something happened, that brought back many memories of stress and frustration from my childhood regarding our old NES system: the flashing power bulb, and the strobing gray screen on the television.
My joy was now defeated, and I heard the sound of my heart crying. I tried many tried and true methods to have the decrepit console function, but to no avail. No amount of blowing on the circuitry would revive the poor creature. So, in utter defeat, I unhooked the system, placed it where I found it, and sat in a chair. The lights dimmed around me, except for a single dim light bulb that shined on me. My heart, practically in pieces, was completely broken. I sung my final requiem, and gave up the ghost. And thus it was."

Fin

I hope you enjoyed my presentation, and I thank you for your time. You may resume your normal happy lives now. Thank you.

What an interesting week...

Hello Everybody.

Well, this has been a pretty interesting week, and that's mainly for one reason. There's a greenie in the English Elder's house, Elder Verive, and he has a massive desire to go out and work. However, his companion, Elder Tindall, has been down and out from getting his toes operated on for ingrown toe-nails, and so Elder Huskinson and I have been doing exchanges every day with them, to help Elder Verive get all the experience he can. We haven't been working in our area a lot because of this, and so we don't have a very good week to report. But, generally, every day, we wake up, do everything normal, and go out with Elder Verive. We go from 11 to lunch, then after lunch for a few hours, then one of us goes to dinner with him. Since we've been working so much in their area, their area is BOOMING!...and I really mean booming. It's going so far that it's crazy. They've already got over 4 baptismal dates, and several investigators. They're on fire.
That's about it for them. As for me, there hasn't been anything to really report. The only thing I can even come close to thinking of is that I won the Settlers of Catan game we played. Really, that's about it.
Also, for those who receive this letter and are currently serving, or have served a mission, would you send me experiences on some stuff that may have happened. Most missionaries always explain things about positive experiences or companions they hated, and they rarely talk about how they themselves fared. I want to know mostly about stuff that you would do to keep yourself motivated, keep pushing, times where you think you had been in a slump, or whatever. I'm interested in that sort of stuff, so if you could, that'd be awesome. Thanks, and have a good one.

Happy year mark to me

Yeah, for those who don't know yet, this last Thursday officially marked my one year time of being a missionary. And you know what that means. That means two things:

1. My life's over...
2. FIRE!!! I burnt a shirt. It should be in a video on my next card home.

I don't have a lot of time left now, but that's about it. Thanks everyone for all the support you've given me thus far on my mission, and I look forward to another great year.

Well, that's one year down...

Hey everyone.

As I'm sure you all can see right now, I'm hitting my year mark. I'll have been a missionary for exactly one year at around 8:16 PM Utah time on Wednesday night. I don't really count that as being a missionary, but it's close to the exact time or so. I hope that I don't go absolutely crazy from this, espeically since this first year just flew by like nobody's business. I've heard that the second is always faster, so I have a feeling I'm going to go a bit crazy.
Anyways, things have been kinda slowing down here. I don't really like that and am not too happy about it, but we're trying really hard to improve ourselves. I've been coming out of a slump from the time I spent in Northridge, so it's been slower than I'd like, but I'm still trying. As far as the area, we had a pretty good lesson yesterday. Elder Huskinson and I did splits yesterday with two of the young men from the branch, and we worked in different parts of our area. I taught a family that I think is really ready for the Gospel, but just needs to come to church more, and pray to know the truth. They have no problem doing reading from the Book of Mormon, but they just need to do those two things, and we can baptize them before the end of the transfer. That'd be nice. But, that's really the only thing we've got going for us. We have another investigator who is going along really well, too. I'm hoping that we can get in more lessons with her soon. We'll see, though.
That's about it. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go crawl into a corner and try to take in the fact that I've been away from home for about a year now. That's still freaky to me.

Elder Shepherd

P.S. I've noticed that some of you like sending me pictures. If you would all please keep them a reasonably small size, preferably somewhere in the 500 KB range, I can put them on my mp3 player, and enjoy them outside of email. Thanks.

New Transfer!

Hello Everybody

So, as I'm sure you've all noticed, the new transfer has started. It began today, and I'm still here in Lake L.A. with Elder Huskinson. As far as stuff in missionary work, we didn't get a whole lot done. We tried a lot to meet with our investigators, but some of them just didn't want to. It was disappointing, but we did start teaching the non-member daughter of a member family. We're hoping that we see something good with her, but I'm not too sure how keen she is on changing. We'll see, though. We've only taught her once so far.
So, I'm still doing good. My address hasn't changed from what it has been since I got here, but if you don't know it, here it is again:

Elder Marcus Keith Shepherd
41056 168th St. East
Lancaster, CA 93535

If you still want to send me stuff, that's perfectly fine. I love hearing from you guys. Email is good, but letters are sometimes better (Especially considering how I haven't gotten one for like over 3 months). But, you can send it by email if you want.
Anyways, nothing too big has been happening, so take care everybody.

What a crazy week...

This has been a really crazy week

The main reason for that is because of something that happened on Wednesday evening. I'll get to explaining that in just a while, but it's really weird.
Anyways, the area has been good. We're still working hard and finding new people, however, we're no longer sure that our main investigator, Margarita, is as solid as we thought she was. She came to church four weeks in a row just before I came here, and she was in dire need of money for her house, because she was being threatened with eviction. So, we asked the church to help her out, and we did. With a fairly good sum of money, too. But, ever since then, she hasn't come to anything church related. We're kinda thinking she wasn't as ready as we thought, but she's still really good. We'll see, though. We're thinking of dropping her. As far as that, we haven't had much progress with anyone else. We're working really hard, no doubt, but it's still not going much of anywhere yet. We're still hoping, though.
As for me, I'm starting to see some change in my body from P90X. I'm pretty sure I mentioned it in last week's email, but I'm still way tired. I did the Chest and Back workout this morning, and I killed myself. I'm hurting so much that it's almost no longer funny. But, this stuff happens, so we'll see what goes on.
Anyways, I bet you're all wondering by now what it was that I thought was so weird. Here it is. We were passing by an old investigator's house, and they were prepping for something. We went in and talked with them, trying to get a first lesson in, which we thought was good, since they said that more people were coming over after that. So, we skipped our dinner and stayed, expecting to teach a lesson. No. Other people show up, and we soon find out that this is a church meeting in their own house. We didn't want to be rude, so we stayed. Then, they decided to get really crazy. Music, dancing, and a sermon that I couldn't understand and that made almost no sense. Then, after a while, the pastor invited all those who wanted to accept Jesus Christ in their lives and be saved to come forward. A few people did, and then he turned straight to us, and asked us the same question. We were both thrown off, and a bit hesitant. He asked again, and Husky said yes in a bit of a confused tone. They pulled him forward, and then they motioned for me to go, so I did. In this little circle, they told us to recite a set prayer. After the prayer (which I simply mouthed, not saying anything), he prayed again, placed his hands on one guy, and then other people came in and did the same. Then they did it to Husky. I looked at him, and I could tell he felt awkward. I was almost laughing it was so funny. Then, they did it to me, and I was so weirded out. The pastor said I was going to feel something strong. I felt something very awkward, as he and others placed their hands on me. It was so weird. Then they left me, and went to the next. I retreated to Husky's corner, and said, "Dude, I think they just baptized US!" We laughed. It was such a weird night. It was so crazy.
Anywyas, that's what happened, and it went straight into the journal. I'll remember that for a while. Anyways, to all those who read these, take care, and also, since this is transfer weekend, don't send any mail until next week. I may not get it. But then again, I haven't received a letter in months, so that's hardly a problem.

Love

I am flat-out tired...

Hello everybody

As the title to this email said, I am dog tired all the time now. I'll explain in a bit, but for now, here's a quick recap of what's been happening.
One of our main investigators has gotten a baptismal date. She's super ready for the gospel, and I'm getting really excited for her. However, We've hardly been able to meet with her, and so we need to really up the number of times we're meeting with her...especially since the date with her is this Sunday. It sounds impossible, and it probably won't happen, but we'll move it back a bit and keep trying. She's super ready. Also, we are working with a family that is super ready as well. We went over there last night with a young man from a member family, and we talked over there. The sad thing was that, they have a Wii, and the two kids were playing Bubble Bobble. I don't know how many of you know that, but that's a really fun game. We got talking on the subject of video games (my natural element) and I found out they had a game called Super C (Contra) on it as well. They fired that one up just to show me. I was dying sitting there in the couch. That is such an awesome game. They offered to even let me play it. I turned it down, naturally, but I still was really tempted. Anyways, we talked with them last night, and they are finally starting on that we're asking them to change, which is good. A lot of people out here think that we're only going around to teach the Bible. We're asking a little more than that. So, I think I need to work it into what we teach. Anyways, we were talking, and we asked them if they'd be baptized into the church. They said yes. We didn't set a specific date, but they said they would. We're going over there tonight, and they're going to feed us dinner (taquitos de papas = Potato taquitos), and we'll teach them a lesson. I'm super excited for them. Also, we found a former investigator from over a year ago or so, and she's also super ready. She blew off the missionaries originally, saying she wasn't ready, but she seems to be ready now. We taught the first lesson, walked out, and did some good mental backflips. It was awesome. Also, I did exchanges on Thursday, and I have to say that that was easily the most boring day of my mission. The elder I was with is super boring. I'll spare his name, but it was awful.
Anyways, as to why I'm so tired all the time. If you all remember correctly, about four months ago, I said I was going to start doing a workout program called P90X. I did it for about 9 days, and quit. I was so disappointed in myself. Well, I'm doing it again, but the greatest thing about it this time is that I'm doing it with Elder Ulloa. I'm getting more into the routine of things. I've been doing it for 8 days, and I'm feeling pretty good about myself. I've already felt some good improvements, so I'm happy. I'll probably continue. But, P90X workouts each consist of about an hour. It's exhausting to get up at 6:15, pound myself for an hour, and then go out at 11 and work until 9. I'm tired a lot. But, I'm feeling really stronger now, so I'm happy.
Anyways, that's about it for this week. Take care everyone, and please keep sending me emails.

Another week, I guess

Man, there is nothing to report on from this last week

I literally mean that there is nothing. Last week wasn't really that great for us, so I don't have anything new to update with, really. I would try to tell you all about something, but I just can't think of a whole lot.
One thing was that we spray-painted our planners. One of the elders I live with, Elder Ruiz, has been really good with spray-painting, mostly space pictures, and he's showed us how to do it. It's really cool. I did it to mine, and it looks really cool. It'll be on the next card I send home, but that won't be for a while.
Really, that's about all I can think of. I'll try and have something more meaningful for next week.

There is nothing, for as far as the eye can see‏

Hello everyone

So, the title of this email is referring to the area in which I live: because there really is nothing for as far as the eye can see. It's pretty impressive, but I'm loving it out here. For those who don't know, I'm on a bike, serving in the spanish branch. My area isn't too huge, about 1x3 miles, but it's still got a lot in it. Now, I'm not too sure what to say, so I'll start by giving a summary of the days here:

Monday: I got up here around 5, and got to the house (yes, it's a house, not an apartment), unpacked really quickly, and went straight to dinner. The great thing is that all the elders I live with all serve in the same branch, so we all go to the same dinner appointments, and the other elders have a truck. Huskinson and I generally bike to our appointments, but we almost always have a ride home from them, since the days practically over at that time. Anyways, we went to our ward mission leader's house, the Villareals. They're really cool, and they've got lots of farm animals. But, the geese in the back yard are crazy. They want to kill us, so we stay away from them. It was a good dinner. Tacos. Yummm....

Tuesday: Don't recall.

Wednesday: We went to a recent convert's house called Margarita. She's really nice, and the food was fairly good. However, they're having some problems in the family. It's sad, but it's how it is in spanish work. So much drama.

Thursday: I managed to obtain possession of a boot-legged copy of Hop. We aren't planning on watching it, but I may just send it home to get it out of my hands. Also, we went to a meeting with one of our main investigators. Her name is Margarita, also, and she is super solid. While there, she asked a lot of questions, some of them about really deep doctrine. I won't say what was asked, but I'll reassure you all, it was really deep. At that time, she had a sick dog, and it was only 5 months old. She was wondering if we could heal him with the laying on of hands, like she had read in the bible. Naturally, we can't do that with animals, but we said a prayer, and began a fast the next day. Also, she's been threatened with foreclosure, and so we were fasting for that, too.

Friday: District meeting. We had to go to the church that night for correlation, and while there, Margarita was trying to talk to our branch president about obtaining funds to pay for rent. She told us there, though, that that morning, her dog was better, and she believed it was because we had prayed and fasted, and she said she wants to keep coming to the LDS church. We were calm, but inside, I was jumping for joy. It was really cool.

Saturday: We had an easter activity. That was really fun.

Sunday: My first sacrament meeting in the spanish branch. All I recall about the Van Nuys ward was instantly brought back when I was there: the drama, the fact that I understand so little, and the fact that NOBODY can sing except us. It was painful, to say the least. But, it was still pretty good, especially since the bishop of the english ward said he'd spot Margarita money for the rent. Let's just hope that she doesn't become dependant on it.

I'm running out of time, so I gotta go. Talk to you all later.

I'm freakin' 20, and my birthday present is a new area and new companion‏

Hello everyone

For those who don't know, yesterday, April 17th, was my 20th birthday. So, I'm freakin' 20. That's a scary thought to me. First off, it's because I'm officially no longer a teenager. As I put it to a member at church yesterday, "Dang it, I'm 20. Now I have to be responsible. Dang It!" That's essentially what I feel, but I don't really care too much, actually. Even though I now have to take a bit more responsibility, I'll still always have that little kid inside me that I absolutely refuse to let die. It doesn't mean I won't mature, it means I'll just throw in a few immature fun moments to keep life entertaining. Am I brilliant or what?
Okay, anyways, about what happened for my birthday. I wanted to go out to dinner, and my loving parents kindly provided me with money to do so. We went to a burger joint in Encino called the Stand. It is this really good joint that offers MASSIVE burgers. and I mean MASSIVE. I got a bleu cheese and bacon burger. It was really good. I even took my companion, and the Zone Leaders in our apartment with me. It was really good. Also, yesterday, a few things happened.

1. I found out just how much the members of my ward loved me...and how much I loved them. We were all really good friends, and now I'm leaving them. I'm going to miss them so much, but I'm going to enjoy a new ward. I did get pictures, though, so I'll always be able to remember them.
2. We came home from church, and there was a frosted bundt cake on the table that our Zone Leaders made for my birthday. They are so cool sometimes.
3. We went home teaching with our ward mission leader. We went to the Browns, my absolute favorite family in the whole ward. However, my ward mission leader is hard of hearing, so the whole time, he was calling Wesley, the son in the family, Leslie. It got so bad to the point that everyone was cracking up. He thought we were all laughing at Wesley, but he didn't know. I told him, which he was really embarrassed about, but I think he can only look back and laugh at it now. He still, though, calls Elder Newey Elder Newley. It's hilarious, but kinda embarrassing for him. We think it's probably better that we don't tell him that one until he's gone.
4. We had dinner with my brother from another mother. I'm serious about that one. Bro. Magleby and I are so alike that it's freaky. He likes pokemon, I like pokemon. He likes Mega Man, I like mega man. He likes Disney/Pixar movies, I like Disney/Pixar movies. It's freaky how alike we are, but, naturally, we're amazing friends. He's the one I'm going to miss so much. Not to mention, his wife is just the sweetest thing you'll ever meet in your life. He really worked hard on his mission, and he got the most amazing girl ever. We had an awesome dinner there, and they even surprised me with a birthday cake and ice cream. It was cool.
5. We had a missionary musical fireside. It wasn't nearly as good as the one that my ward put on, but it was still good, especially the last singer. He sung Via Dolorosa (The Way of Suffering, from Spanish to English). It was so powerful. I said a lot of good-byes, especially to my one friend who I've had ever since I got here on the mission. He goes home this wednesday, and I'm going to miss him so much.

So that's what happened yesterday. It was awesome.
Also, as I'm sure you guessed by now, I'm getting transferred. It's not exactly a good birthday present, but I'm excited. I'm going to the Lake Los Angeles Spanish branch, and my companion's name is Elder Huskinson. I've heard a lot of good things about him, and I've also heard that they do almost nothing in Lake Los Angeles except for board games and whatnot. That's going to be fun. I'm pretty excited. I'm sad that I'm leaving so many friends here in the valley, but you've gotta do what the president says you gotta do, so I'm peacing out. Here's the address for my new pad:

Elder Marcus Shepherd
41056 168th St. East

Well, I'm running out of time, so I gotta go. Take care, y'all.

300 Days Already!?

Yes, folks

As the title of the email says, I've been out on a mission for 300 days, today as a matter of fact. I'm not counting, but before the mission, I went through and marked a few milestones for the mission. Namely every 100 days and every three months. I swear I'm not counting down the days till I come home, I just like to enjoy these little markers.
Anyways, I personally enjoyed General Conference. Can I hear a hallelujah from everyone else who did? My personal favorite talk was President Monson's talk in the Priesthood Session about marriage. It was funny, but also it made me think a lot about what I'm facing when I come home. I'm excited to get married, but I'm also really freaked out about it. Because, when I'm married, I have to take some responsibility. I'll have to get a good job to support ourselves, finish college, have some kids, and begin an adult life. But, then again, that is all based on how I do on the dating scene. For those who don't know yet, I never dated in high school, and frankly never tried to have a girlfriend because I figured that since I was going to go on a mission, I'd have to dump her anyways, since a girlfriend on the mission is nasty business. My last companion, Elder Bills, actually told a lot a story about how a missionary in his branch got Dear John'd, and he hitchhiked to Texas from Michigan in the middle of that very night. That is a bad sign that girls aren't healthy for a missionary. So, I'm going to have some major catching up to do, but I'm going to at least try. Maybe go to a YSA ward, attend the activities, actually ask for numbers, take a few on a date, and who knows, I could be married before I even know it. It's freaky, yes, but I think I'll be ready when the time comes.
As far as the area is going, we tried to have a lesson with our main investigator, but she was busy at the time, and had to reschedule. That's sadly what happens a lot out here. People don't really keep appointments very well, and so we are running all over the place trying to get stuff done, but nothing happens. It's depressing when your investigators don't really keep up with their commitments, but they do this according to their own agency. Not much we can do about that, now is there?
As far as an announcement, the 17th of this month is officially (as if it could ever be unofficial) my 20th birthday. I'm really freaking out about that. If anyone is ever interested in this, you can send me whatever you feel: Money, birthday cards, spam, chain letters, hate mail, whatever you like. If you don't know, here's my address:

Elder Marcus Shepherd
9511 Darby Ave. #105
Northridge, CA 91325

I'll be in there for sure until April 17th. The day after that is transfers, so I don't know what's going to happen. I'd at least appreciate emails wishing me happy birthday.
Thanks everyone for all your support, y que les vaya bien. Vayanse con Dios, tambien.

Short Email

I'm in a bit of a hurry today.

There's something that I want to check out in the mall today before we have to leave, so I'm being short. There'll be a small video of it with my next SD card, but I'm in a bit of a hurry.
As for last week, it was pretty good. We worked pretty hard, and I'm glad to say that we got a new investigator. She's a single mother, with two kids. She's been looking for something new in her life, but has always been concerned that her past life is keeping her from being worthy of repentance. Thankfully for her, the Gospel can solve that flat out. When we taught her, we extended a soft baptismal commitment (When you find out these things are true, will you be baptized?), to which she said yes. Me and Elder Newey are pretty excited about that. I'm especially excited about that. I may actually get my first convert baptism. Yes, for those who don't know yet, I haven't had any convert baptisms on my mission. But, the number of baptisms doesn't matter. What matters is that we get out every day, and work hard. That's what we're doing, and we may finally be getting someone. That'll be good, I hope.
After that, there isn't really anything to report. We keep trying to find new people, but it seems like they're hiding, waiting for us to find them. Let's hope that something good comes soon. Okay, thanks, and have a good one. I know this is short, and I'm sorry.

New Week, I guess

Hello Everyone

I decided to try something different this time, and do my mass email first. I don't know, though, if I'll have time to get to the other emails I have. I don't have a lot but I still may not, depending really on how much time the others want to spend here. But, here's what's been going on.
One of our main investigators is still living in her bad situation. We've tried many times to get her out, but we can't seem to find anything, and frankly, I'm thinking that if she's going to move out, it needs to be somewhere where she can live alone. The reason she's still in that situation with her boyfriend is because she's never had to depend on herself for her own support in her life, and has depended on others to provide for her. It's sad, but that's how it's been, and I'm thinking that if she did move out of that situation, she'd simply be going from one place to another, just so we can baptize her. That doesn't sound right, so I'm a little hesitant to continue looking for places for her to move out, unless she intends to move out on her own.
Also, we were given another investigator by one of our ward missionaries. I don't know if I've talked about her yet, but she and her daughter are really nice. They live with a less-active/part member family in our ward, and have lately been looking for a good church. The only problem is that we've been having a heck of a time trying to meet with them. Their schedule is so sporadic that we can never get a solid time. We're trying, though, because she's got some good potential. Also, the same ward missionary got in contact with one of our former investigators. We're going to try stopping by him sometime this week.
Also, one person we were stopping by for the longest time has been admitted to the hospital. She has been fighting an infection in her foot for a long time, but she keeps smoking, and that has really hindered her healing process. We've been meeting and chatting with her, but haven't gotten around to talking about the gospel. The reason was to make friends first, and then move on to the gospel. But, she's lately been admitted to the hospital, and, from what the person who answered the door said, she's going to be in a home soon. So, we've essentially lost track of her. Kinda sad, but that sort of stuff happens sometimes.
As for other stuff, on P-day, we had Indian Food Fear Factor. It wasn't really terrible. The food (some of it, anyways) was actually pretty good. Then, after that, we were playing board games. This was also at the Institute building, and so there was a ping-pong and a pool table. That was fun. Other than that, this week was fairly uneventful.
That about covers it for now. Please keep sending me the emails, and I'll talk to you all later. Loves

New Transfer and New Comp

Hello everyone.

This week begins a new transfer. Like the title page says, Elder Bills has been transferred out. He's going back to Lancaster. Although I didn't really get along with him, we were able to depart on good terms, and he and I are still going to stay in contact for the most part. My new companion's name is Elder Newey. He seems really cool from what I can see thus far. I don't really know, though, what he's like, so I'll talk more next week about how he is. Hopefully, this next transfer will be better with him.
I'm still in Northridge, though, and so my address is still good for sending me stuff. In case you don't know my address, here it is:

Elder Marcus Keith Shepherd
9511 Darby Ave. #105
Northridge, CA 91325

I look forward to a new transfer, and thanks everyone for all your support. It really makes a huge difference for me. Thanks, and take care.

It's all gone to pots...

My companionship, that is.

The reason for that is as follows. I recently got sent my "Killer Bunnies and the Quest for the Magic Carrot" game from my parents, and talking about how awesome it is to my companion, he says, "No, I've already played it. I don't really like it." I wasn't content to let it slide, though, and so I just kept telling him how awesome it was to have all the booster packs. I've had the game for a little over a week now. We, as an apartment, have come to an agreement. If we all participate in a wrestling match, then we will all have to play a board/card game of my choice. I was getting psyched on Sunday night to wrestle, so we could play Killer Bunnies. Then, Elder Bills said something about Killer Bunnies rules that didn't make sense, since he had played it before. I asked him, "What do you mean? You've played it before." He said, "Actually, I was BSing that. I've never played it." And, laughing, he says, "I'm just sick of having to learn new games." That really made me mad. First off, why would he lie to me about something as trivial as knowing how to play a game? Second, how can he know it's a bad game if he's never played it.? One of my biggest pet peeves is when people rag on something they don't know about, without even finding out if it's good or bad. (Kind of an interesting analogy to the Gospel, huh? Many people know nothing about it, yet they put it down without knowing how much it can bless them.) So, I've lost a lot of respect for Elder Bills, and have started caring just a little less. I've tried hard these last 12 weeks to make it work with him, and it's not been happening. If he finds it necessary to lie to me about something as trivial as a card game, then he and I have a serious problem. So yeah, things aren't looking up.
But, at least I can say that transfer calls are this weekend. With any luck, one of us will be transferred, and we'll never have to deal with each other ever again. Odds are that he'll be transferred, since he's been in this area for 24 weeks, and I've only been here for 12, but since I'm supposedly only a spanish-speaking missionary, I may get sent out. I did, however, express my desire to my mission president to no longer be with him. I'll report next Monday about how the transfers go. With luck, we're no longer together, but if we are together, I may need intervention to prevent myself from pegging him in the face a few times.
That's really about all that's happened. We've found an awesome investigator and her daughter, and they're both looking for a good church. So, if they want a good church, why not present them with one of the best, right?

Take care

Elder Shepherd

P.S. Starting next week, for sure, I'm no longer able to do emails on Tuesdays. Only Mondays. and I mean it this time. ONLY MONDAYS!!! If you want me to receive your emails, I suggest you send them to me on Sunday evenings. Those are the best times to write, anyways.

Thursday, February 24, 2011

Hello Everyone, but this is the last warning

I don't have much time, but I think it's about time I raised a final warning. I will NOT be able to check my emails on Tuesdays anymore. I'm only going to be able to do it on Mondays. Odds are, too, that I'll be doing it early in the morning, around 10:00-11:00 AM California time. So, if you want me to respond to your emails, you should at least submit them before 10 AM on Monday. Sunday evening is probably the best time for sending me an email. I'll still be sending out a weekly email, but I'm only going to be able to do it on Mondays. Emails on other days are going to be prohibited. So, that's just a final warning.
In other news, I don't know yet, but I think there should be some pictures on my blog going up soon. To Emily: If you haven't posted those yet, they're at the house. Stay tuned for those. There's bound to be some really interesting ones.

Down with the sickness otra vez...

Hey everyone

So, as I'm sure you all can guess, I was sick just recently. On thursday last week, I started getting some nasal drainage, and with it, the accompanying sore throat. I didn't feel too bad at the end of the day, but on Friday, I was floored. I was so out of it that I couldn't do practically anything. I slept all the way after district meeting. That was about a time span of 3 hours. It was a pain. Also, the fact that I had to go out to dinner that night didn't help out. I wouldn't have gone, but since there were no other replacement missionaries available in the area, and the fact that this member drove down for an hour to take us out, both compelled me to go. It was mexican food. Not what I would've chosen, but it wasn't awful. I certainly wouldn't have gotten sick for it again, though. Anyways, I was fine on Saturday, better on Sunday, and Monday, I'm completely better. It wasn't a very fun weekend for me.
However, Monday was a good day for me, because I got to see my MTC companion, Elder Grandy, again. We haven't seen or been in contact with each other for about 6 months now, so it was a good reunion. Combined with Elder Lyman, the other elder who came out with us from our MTC District, it was an essential MTC Reunion. It was pretty fun. He's actually a lot cooler than what I remember. We were able to talk about a lot more stuff then, and we caught up, essentially. He was evidently in Lake L.A. in the desert for four transfers, and this is his first transfer into the valley. He's been doing fine, though, and he is enjoying being around his trainer, his MTC buds, as well as others. I'm also happy to see him again.
As for what made monday special, it was an event called Tri-Zone, where all the zones in the valley gather together for socializing, sports, and good times. It's generally lots of fun. I played a bit of Ultimate Frisbee, but a lot of my ocarina. I don't really dig sports that much, so I just kinda spent my time socializing. It was fun, though. However, something interesting happened. A man came up, with a Bible in his hand, and tried proselyting among us missionaries. He had no idea we were LDS Missionaries, but he had a good conversation with my trainer, Elder Houghton. He kinda had conflicting opinions, but Elder Houghton was able to handle him so professionally. He was able to combat his points, but also able to teach. Bashing is something we missionaries generally don't engage in, but he was teaching at the same time, so he kept it from the point of bashing. We actually managed to give him a Book of Mormon, and he said he was fairly interested in learning more, since some of the stuff he knew about Mormons were anti stuff, anyways. It was a good experience. It also made me realize, even more, just how kick-butt my trainer is. I love my daddy!
That's about it for what's happened. Elder Bills and I haven't been finding anyone new to teach, really, although we did get a less-active member interested in taking the lessons. She hasn't been to church in forever, and said she'd be interesting in hearing what we have to say. Other than that, ther hasn't been much of anything. So, that's about it. Tengan cuidado, mis amigos, y que les vaya bien!

Lots of Moving

Hello Everyone

I decided this week that I needed to make this email kinda short, sweet, and to the point.
Basically, I'm sure you're all wondering why it's taken me up to today (Thursday) to email, when I normally do it on Tuesday? BTW, quick note, I'm going to soon be doing my emails on MONDAYS. It's a new policy that I have to adapt to, so I hope that you guys make the adjustments accordingly. Anways, back to what I was originally talking about.
The reason why I'm emailing today is that we've been doing a lot of moving. On Tuesday, we got a call that one of our members need TONS of help moving out, because they had to be out of their house by 5 on Wednesday. We showed up, and TONS of help was an understatement. They hadn't taken anything at all to their new house. Thankfully, we had about 15 missionaries there to help, so things went good, which was a real blessing because the elders quorum flaked out on us. Then again, with that many missionaries, we still hadn't finished. Anyways, we were there from 1 to 5, and so we had no time to go do emails.
Yesterday, another member was in desperate need of getting out that day, so we helped him. We had planned on helping him, then going back to the other member's house to help them finish at 1. But, he kept piling stuff in the pile for us to move, and we didn't get done with him until 2. The sad thing is that he kept putting stuff into the truck that would all have had to fit into a 2 room apartment. Not 2 bedroom, 2 room! I'm surprised if he manages that. Anyways, we got to the other house, and helped for an hour, then Elder Bills and his former companion, Elder Johnson, had to prepare to go to the temple with their recent converts. Since I wasn't part of their baptism process, I wasn't privilieged to go to the temple. I really REALLY wanted to, though. Anyways, me and Elder Johnson's companion, Elder Zayas, helped out at the house until about 5:15, and then we went to dinner at T.G.I. Fridays with an awesome member family. It was a really awesome dinner, but I was exhausted after that.
Anyways, I need to go right now, so I'll talk to you all later. I just sent an SD card with pictures home, so keep an eye out for that!

Where does my time go?

I just realized something

I rarely get around to writing these emails. These are supposed to be my link for others to see a little bit of what my mission life is like. Not to mention, since I send them to myself, they're kinda like a journal. I really need to step it up more. I seem to not have a lot of time left over at the end of an email session to send it. I gotta get more vigilant in this. As Mad Eye Moody once said, "Constant Vigilance!"
Anyways, this last week has been a bit of a roller coaster. Our main investigadora will likely not be able to be baptized. She has been living in a bad situation for a long time, and one that won't allow her to be baptized. We've been working hard to get her out of it, but the member who was offering her a room has retracted her offer. The reason for this is that our investigator has essentially been babied her whole life. She hasn't really ever had to take care of herself, and she doesn't know how. So, moving out for her is something that is really hard. The member said that she wasn't ready to move out. Although she would've, she probably would've crashed and burn or something. So, that was a bit of bad news for me and Elder Bills. However, I did get two upsides.
Magic: The Gathering has gotten some sort of surge amongst the missionaries here, and I inherited a ton of cards from missionaries who didn't want them or were leaving. So, I had a small collection. I played it a lot in Van Nuys, but no one here knows how to play, so I decided to find a game store, take them in, and sell them. I got 25 dollars for all of them, and I got an awesome copy of Carcassonne. Although I have a travel sized copy of it (Thanks mom and dad), I've been wanting a full-size version for future expansions. The travel one can't play with expansions. I'm happy about that.
Also, yesterday, we biked from our apartment all the way to Universal Studios, and hung out at the outdoor strip mall, Citywalk, while there. It was lots of fun. Although it was hard, and I've got a bit of a sunburn from it, it was lots of fun, and it helped me and Elder Bills bond more, which is good because our companionship, although stronger than before, is still a bit fragile. We're both actively working on making it better, though. So, that was fun.
Well, that's about it for what has been going on. I hope that everyone is doing well, and I hope that you guys have a good day.

Elder Shepherd

P.S. Our apartment is at 9511 Darby Ave. Northridge, CA. Mapquest the route to Universal Studios to see just how much we biked. It was LONG!

New Transfers, better relations, and an awesome resolution to lose weight

Hello everyone

As I'm sure you've guessed, this week starts a new transfer for me. We got the calls last Saturday, and Me and Elder Bills are both staying in Northridge. As for the missionaries in our apartment, or our ZLs, one of them, Elder Saena, is staying, while the other one, Elder Tafur, is going back home to Colombia. The new ZL is Elder Chamberlain (We affectionately call him Chamba), and he's a really legit elder. We're betting that this transfer is going to be awesome. Although I'm sad that Elder Tafur has left, because he was a really great friend to me, we're going to have new relations to build, especially with Chamba. That is one of the best benefits of being a missionary. You get to make so many more new friends, and you get to learn so much about the Gospel that you often wonder why your head hasn't exploded before it's all ended.
I'm out of time, so I'll really finish. Elder Bills and I are doing good, and I'm going to start a workout program called P90X. If you want to know what that is, look it up. It's extremely intense.
Gotta go. Lunch awaits.

Seven Months?

Have seven months really passed?

I can't believe I'm already through the greater portion of a year. This is really freaky how fast time flies. But, thinking on time doesn't help, so here's really what happened this week.
The only real things I can think of is on Sunday, when we went to a member's house. They put on a movie about J. Golden Kimball, the swearing apostle. He lived around the 1920-1930's time as an apostle, and the stories that were being told about him in that movie were hilarious. He would often swear and use vulgar language, even in church and conference talks. I couldn't help but laugh.
Yesterday, we were at a member's house, and they asked me to set up their Wii. So, that was very interesting. I did it, and they played a game afterwards, but the odd thing was that the parents in this family got up and started arguing over the dumbest thing, mainly that they were arguing over who lost the Wii Sports game. This family is quite dysfunctional, and these stupid little arguments aren't helping. We're planning a really awesome lesson that hopefully will unite them a bit more, but we don't know how it'll be received.
That's about it for what's happened. I love you all, and sorry for the shortness of the email. I'm about out of time.

Hello 2011!

Well, hello to all

So, this last week was the last week of 2010, and this Saturday, we welcomed in the new year of 2011. We've got some great things coming up for 2011 in the mission, as last weeks Zone Conference made apparent, but here's the weekly overview.
Monday, we did nothing. It was honestly the lamest P-Day I've ever had. Even the ones in the MTC weren't nearly as terrible. We could go to the temple then. But now, we have so many other options, and none of them are taken. It was really depressing, actually. I tried to start up a game of Settlers of Catan, except by the time I had finished explaining it to Elder Saena, no one else would play, so he went back to bed. It sucked.
On Tuesday, we tried by a few people. We met someone named Ria, who has lately been suffering from an ulcer on her leg. As we were sitting with her, I couldn't help but keep looking at her leg. It was wrapped in a cast, and the parts that weren't wrapped were red, swollen around the cast, and just looking awful. I was feeling really sorry for her. We gave her a blessing after that. Then, we tried to find a referral. Not home. We did email, and that was about it.
On Wednesday, I can't really remember what we did, but it was probably the night that we went to the Ingram's house. They're an awesome member family. What was really awesome was that the daughter there has a baby chick, two newborn bunnies, and a hedgehog that she's watching over temporarily right now. Luckily, I had my camera on me, so I got some really good pictures of all of them. It was lots of fun.
On Thursday, we had Zone Conference from about 9:00 AM to 4:50 PM. Long, but worth it. One of the things my mission president has brought up is that we set a goal of 500 baptisms this year. Although we came short, it was by about 30. So, this year, he's set the bar even higher, and made the goal 654 baptisms. It sounds way up there, but there is a talk from Pres. Hinckley, where he said that, although the missionary effort is increasing due to Preach my Gospel, he had a vision in which the number of baptisms each year could double. Pres. Martin wants to help make this possible. Although 654 isn't the required number to reach our part in that goal, it is a huge step towards what next years goal will likely be, namely in the 750's to 800's. It'll be huge, and it'll be hard, but it can be done. Also, he stressed safety, and used the example of how my last companion, Elder Adamovich, was hit by a car on his bike last week. I freaked out, and wanted to know immediately if he was fine. Thankfully, nothing really happened, but that was because he was wearing his helmet. Those things are really useful. I haven't really passed a day yet where I don't wear one. I don't like wearing them, but it's a rule, and it's only for our safety. He also stressed that if we wanted a sure-fire way to stay junior companion, we didn't need to wear our seat-belts in cars, and to, as it's called, "6-man it." 6-manning is when we put 6 missionaries into a five-seatbelt car. I am ashamed to say that I did it regularly in Van Nuys, but it's been changed lately. They have been trying really hard to avoid doing it. I hope that they keep up that good work.
On Friday, it was District Meeting. Our DL didn't really show up, because he lives about 3 to 5 miles from the chapel we meet at, and he's on bike. I pity him. We had a lesson from a good friend of mine, Elder Jeffrey, and we used a demonstration to show how important it is to follow the spirit. Namely, we put Elder Bills in a blindfold, rearranged the room, and made him wander through blindfolded, with the Spirit, me, as his whispering guide. It was really funny to watch, especially since I had to back off at one point, to simulate how hard it is sometimes to feel the Spirit. Then, lunch. I went to In-N-Out, and had a Double-Double protein style. Protein Style is really where they just wrap the burger in lettuce instead of buns. It was interesting, but still really good. I love In-N-Out. Then, later that night, I finally convinced the elders into playing Settlers of Catan, although I'm sure I annoyed them so much that they decided to do it. It took way too long, due to a terrible set-up, and Elder Saena and Elder Bills, who played it for the first time that night, didn't seem to have too much fun, even though Elder Saena won. Then, we downed a bottle of Martinelli's, and went to bed.
On Saturday, we went to the Buterbaugh's for dinner. While over there, the father made the world's most amazing home-made pizza. He's really got a knack for that. It was awesome. Then, we and some of their children, all grown-up, went to the other room and played Signs for a good 2 hours. It was SO FUN! Then, we toyed around with their Nerf guns. They spent too much time with them as kids, and so they have monstrous Nerf guns, and do battle with them frequently. It was so much fun. That was that night.
On Sunday, we went to church. I was feeling particularly lonely, because the other elders in our apartment and myself don't really connect. So, I was feeling lonely. At Sacrament meeting, the time came to bear testimonies. A tradition in our ward holds that incoming and outgoing missionaries bear their testimonies. Elder Bills told me that I had to go, and I was feeling pretty ticked. I, for some reason, have this mental block on me for bearing testimony. I don't know why, but I just don't like it. So, I told him no, and that the bishop had forgotten. We then had a silent argument, back there on the pew. He said, "You'll be the first missionary who hasn't done it here." I shut up at that point, because I wanted to punch him, and any furthur provocation would've made me punch him, probably. Then, out of feeling lonely, I said a silent prayer, asking for spiritual strength. I got the thought that if I got up there and bore my testimony, it would help the ward know me a bit better. That invigorated me, and I got up and did it. I could literally feel a welcoming spirit in the room when I finished. I feel so much more welcome, and I got a small mental victory over Elder Bills. I know that it's bad to want to have that, since the spirit of contention is of the devil, but he and I just don't connect very well. I'm trying to change that, but it's not going very well. Anyways, later that night, after we were done for the evening, I asked if they wanted to play a game. Although I mentioned Settlers of Catan last, they said that they'd play that. So, I set up another variant. It didn't go well. Elder Tafur and Elder Bills were working together to mess me up, and Elder Saena didn't want to play. Elder Tafur wanted to win, but Elder Bills said that he was never trying to win. That bugged me. I can't stand people who get fun out of board games not from winning, but from messing others up. I go into a board game to have fun, all the time, but I don't go in not intending to win. It went so bad, actually, that Elder Bills said no more Settlers of Catan for the apartment, and that it was causing too much contention. It's as if I lost an arm when he said that.
Anyways, yesterday, we did almost nothing until 2. Elder Bills, Saena, and Tafur went to the Canoga Park Stake Center to play basketball, and I went to Elder Ball's and Hansen's apartment to play Settlers of Catan with them. Although that game was long, we all had fun, because Elder Ball and Elder Hansen play more like me. They always play games to have fun, but they always have the intention to win. I was a lot more pleasant with that game. Then, later that night, we were in a rush to get to dinner, so the ZLs let us use their car. Elder Bills is a danger on the road in a hurry. Anyways, we ate dinner, hurried over to a lesson at Brother Wendt's condo, and came back. It was an okay P-day. The best one I've had since getting here to Northridge.
Well, that's about it. I pray that you all are doing well, and I hope that things are going fine.

Love

Elder Shepherd
